What's New 2009 Report

Rachel Rogerson, the 2009 recipient of the scholarship given by the MacDougall MacCallum Heritage Foundation, assisted Catherine Gillies, Dunollie Homecoming Project Manager, in July at the Dunollie Homecoming in Oban.

24-year-old Rachel, from Dallas, Texas, recently graduated from the University of Texas with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art /Sculpture. She also attended a study abroad program in London where she studied British current issues and Arthurian literature.
Rachel looked forward to learning more about her MacDougall heritage as she assisted at the Dunollie Homecoming.

Rachel had a unique experience with U.K. Border Agency after her arrival at Edinburgh Airport. She was refused entry into the UK. When asked the purpose of her visit she said she was visiting, traveling and volunteering at Dunollie House in Oban. She was to be sent home because you cannot stay in the UK to volunteer as you may displace local workers, a recent immigration legislation. Dunollie project manager, Catherine Gillies, intervened with the UK border officials and UK ministers to allow Rachel to stay. Information warning visitors to not say they are volunteers has been dispersed.

We, the MacDougall McCallum Heritage Foundation, are proud of the talented scholars whom we have aided in an opportunity to enjoy the Scottish experience and help in preserving clan history.

Two benches made from a Dunollie oak tree by an Oban craftsman were placed at the entrance to Dunollie House. The MacDougall McCallum Heritage Foundation has expedited and planned this gift to Dunollie. One bench is in honor of Catherine Gillies, Dunollie project manager, who has been a driving force in the preservation of MacDougall clan history. The other bench is in honor of the MacDougall Clan’s 2009 Homecoming. Also, spotlights focused on Dunollie Castle were made possible by a $1000 donation by the Foundation announced Mark McCartin, President of the Foundation.

Scholarship applications for the $1000.00 2010 John Carasik Scholarship Fund will be accepted after January, 2010.
